How to Make a Linen Mount

As we have hit 2019 its time to catch up with the loose ends. In my previous edition I promised all you ardent readers of ‘Framing Fans 2018’ that the next post would provide an in depth insight into 'making your own linen mount’. So fear no more as the 2019 episode is hear. And making a sensational linen mount is exactly what we are going to do. Unfortunately It will not be quite as elaborate as the mount previously highlighted due to technical ineptness; after loosing all the photographs I took of the previous standard -eye rolls **. Since every day is a new day I am starting again with a new artwork and new linen mount.- this time a float mount for a small mixed media by local artist Kate Shearer.

To begin I measured up a mount with an 8 x 8x 8x 9 border slicing two spaces at an 11cm point down in order to hinge the picture from later.

The mount card was then placed not a larger card backing and sprayed lightly and evenly with high quality spray adhesive. The mount is then transferred onto another surface (in order that the whole thing does not eventually adhere to your table) and the linen is carefully put in place and then pressed down with a hot iron.

When ironing note to cover the linen with some brown paper first and then a thin cloth or pillow case. Iron on high but make sure not to have water in the iron so you are not making the art or mount card damp.

Next step, once the linen is fully adhered to the surface- is to score the material through the slots you cut.

Then turn your board over and using double sided tape- secure the linen at the back.

It should now be time to attach your image- if you have not grown bored of this riveting tutorial by now. Using conservation tape, hinge the artwork to the board/ linen by posting a couple of tabs through your slots and securing them at the back. Carefully place the artwork over the tabs and press down firmly to secure.

Your artwork should hang nicely above your linen mount as shown in the image provided. This Frame has been made using a box frame with 24ct Gold, Venetian blue polemist base, and a 5mm spacer.. The surrounding space around the artwork measures 8 x 8x 8 x 9 cm.

Finally to Round off my technical ineptness for the week- I’d like to mention the image sizes. I can’t seem to change them. Terrific. I spent too long trying and I eventually realised the happiest road was not caring.

Happy 2019 Folks! Thank you for reading !
